What “private label” actually means in clothing

Private labeling in apparel is the process of removing the original manufacturer's label and replacing it with your own brand label. This allows businesses to sell garments under their own brand name without manufacturing the clothing themselves. Private labeling is commonly used by clothing brands, merch companies, and startups.

FAQ

What is the difference between private label and custom clothing manufacturing?
Private labeling uses existing blank garments that are customized with your branding. Custom manufacturing involves producing garments from scratch, including fabric selection, patterns, and sizing. Private labeling is usually faster and more affordable than full custom production.
What does private label mean?
Private label clothing refers to garments that are produced by one manufacturer but sold under another company’s brand name. Businesses customize these garments with their own labels, tags, or neck prints to create a branded product. This approach allows brands to launch clothing lines quickly without managing full-scale manufacturing.
Can I start my own clothing brand using private label apparel?
Yes, many clothing brands start by using private label apparel to launch their products. It allows entrepreneurs to focus on branding, design, and marketing rather than manufacturing logistics. As a brand grows, some businesses transition into custom manufacturing.
Is selling private labeling clothing legal in the United States?
Yes, private labeling clothing is legal in the United States as long as the garments comply with FTC labeling regulations. Required information typically includes fabric content, country of origin, and care instructions. These details must remain on the garment even if the original label is removed.
What information must be on a clothing label in the U.S.?
Clothing labels in the United States must generally include fiber content, country of origin, and care instructions. The label must also identify the responsible company, either through a brand name or an FTC-issued RN number. These requirements are enforced by the Federal Trade Commission.
Do I need an RN number to sell private label clothing?
An RN number is not required, but it is commonly used by apparel brands to identify the company responsible for the product. The number is issued by the FTC and can replace a full business name on garment labels. Most direct to consumer brands use their name for convenience and compliance.
What is the difference between private labeling and relabeling?
Private labeling is the broader process of branding a garment as your own product. Relabeling specifically refers to removing the original label and replacing it with a custom one. Relabeling is one step within the overall private labeling process.
Why do clothing brands remove blank apparel labels?
Brands remove blank apparel labels to create a consistent brand identity. Replacing the manufacturer tag with a custom label helps the product appear fully branded rather than a decorated blank garment. This also increases perceived value and professionalism.
Can clothing labels be removed and replaced?
Yes, many clothing labels can be removed and replaced, especially if the garment has a tear-away tag. Once removed, a new woven label or neck print can be added. However, care must be taken to preserve required garment information.
What is a tear-away label on a shirt?
A tear-away label is a tag designed to be easily removed without damaging the garment. These labels are commonly used by blank apparel manufacturers to make private labeling easier. They are especially common on t-shirts, hoodies, and sweatshirts.
Which clothing brands allow relabeling?
Many blank apparel brands design their garments specifically for relabeling. Brands such as Bella+Canvas, Next Level, and AS Colour commonly offer tear-away labels that simplify the process. These garments are widely used by private label clothing brands. Just about all garments on Apliiq can be relabeled.

Do I need a different label design for each product?
No. Provide your logo once—product-specific info (like size and other required details) is generated based on what you sell.
Can I private label everything?
Practically, yes. Most apparel products you’re building a brand around can be relabeled. A few products have printed labels from manufacturers which cannot be removed, we try to ensure these products are not available for private labeling. Also, some products are braned (not blank) products, like a Nike polo, for these branded products, we cannot remove the manufacturer branding.
Is private label the same as a neck print?
They are similar, but not the same. Neck prints are printed branding inside garments, like t shirts. Private labels, are a physical label, and work more universally across product types like hoodies, pants, and hats.
Can I use more than one label design?
Yes. You can create multiple label designs (ex: “main label,” “kids label,” “premium line”) and choose which one to apply per product.
Does it cost extra to setup different private label designs?
No, you can setup as many designs as you want and they will be stored within your Apliiq account on your subscriptions page.
What file should I upload for my logo?
PNG is recommended. High contrast artwork yields the cleanest print on the label. For example, use a transparent background and a black version of your logo!
Will mockups display my private label?
For products that have mockup images, yes private labels will be displayed.
Are there still bulk discounts on private label purchases?
No. Apliiq is no longer offering bulk discounts on private labeling. However, bulk discounts on product purchases and VIP discounts DO apply to private label purchases.
